PIRTEK's Curran Foundation Gold Partnership
As long-time donors to the St Vincent’s Hospital Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit, Pirtek has continually supported the Foundation through its annual charity event, the Pirtek Fishing Challenge.
The Pirtek Fishing Challenge is run nationally every year and raises funds to support Prostate Cancer research and the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. Over the last 10 years of the Challenge, Pirtek has made a significant contribution to support research at the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit through the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation.
The St Vincent’s Neurology and Neurosciences Department treats people with brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle conditions. To further the care provided by this department, the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit was established in 2011.
Under the direction of Professor Bruce Brew, a team of talented scientists are working to develop treatments for chronic neurological and neurodegenerative disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, HIV-associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Alzheimer’s disease; Parkinson Disease and Stroke.
The Unit runs clinical trials with human volunteers to explore deep brain stimulation, adult stem cell implementation and the treatment of Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. This life-saving work will result in a better understanding of neurological diseases and uncover new ways of alleviating patient’s suffering.
